A long-time donor to the University of Toronto and a proud U of T alum, Glenn H. Carter’s philanthropic support is widespread across the university, reflecting both his range of interests and his desire to support young people throughout their educational journey.

Carter’s decision to support graduate education at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing in particular, stems from his profound belief in the calibre of nurses that graduate from Bloomberg Nursing, and the leadership they provide once they are in the field.

“I have had my experiences with the health care system and with nurses in the past, and I have seen nurses in action,” says Carter. “U of T nurses, they impress me, especially the nurse practitioners. It takes a unique individual to be a nurse. No matter where they are practicing, in hospitals or the community, their leadership is unmistakable.”

This past Spring, Carter established a new endowed award in support of PhD students at Bloomberg Nursing. The Glenn H. Carter Doctoral Scholarship provides financial assistance to doctoral students throughout their academic journey and in their pursuit of innovative and impactful research.

At a recent stewardship event hosted by the University of Toronto, Carter had the opportunity to meet many of his benefactors, including Bloomberg Nursing PhD student Alexia Cumal.

“I am so grateful to be a recipient of the Glenn H. Carter Scholarship. It has allowed me to focus my time and energy on achieving high grades in my courses, improving my research and developing and implementing my PhD study,” says Cumal. “It also allowed me to participate in enrichment activities, including the Graduate Nurses’ Student Society (GNSS), the UHN KITE Trainee Executive Committee, and as a finalist for the University of Toronto 3-Minute Thesis Competition.”

Carter is especially confident in his support of doctoral students at U of T, because he knows that Bloomberg Nursing is ranked number one in Canada and number four globally, attracting the best and brightest from around the world. He is also deeply impressed by the number of Bloomberg Nursing graduates who have pursued key leadership roles outside of nursing.

“Education is the key to everything in a most profound way because it influences every aspect of life,” says Carter, “that is why I give in support of students. Investing in young people who will go on to have an impact, and in the best university in Canada (which is U of T), is the best kind of investment to me.”

Carter ascribes to the personal belief that you don’t hold on to your wealth, you look at what you are going to do with it, and how you can positively impact society. He remains committed to investing in young people and the nurses of tomorrow.

“The future is in our young people, and I’m privileged to be able to be a part of that legacy,” says Carter.
