Through a generous donation from the James H. Cummings Foundation, the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing’s state-of-the-art simulation laboratory (Sim Lab) welcomed a new addition in early April 2017 with the arrival of SimMan3G. An advanced patient simulator, SimMan 3G is designed to deliver the most realistic training possible to every Bloomberg Nursing student who practices in the Sim Lab.
SimMan 3G comes with a long list of features that optimize simulation training scenarios. Instructors can program him to exhibit specific behaviors and symptoms, as well as control how he responds to physical care and medications. Equipped with wireless technology, the SimMan 3G is able to realistically:
- Speak to users/caregivers
- Display specific eye or pupil responses
- Provide CPR feedback
- Bleed
- Experience a spike or drop in blood pressure or pulse
- Experience seizures and convulsions
- Physically react to the type, amount and administration of more than 100 drugs
- Experience a heart attack or other cardiac symptoms
Each and every one of our 355 undergraduate and 167 nurse practitioner students make important use of the Bloomberg Nursing Sim Lab each year, and our simulators play a significant role in training both confident and competent nurses.
In the Sim Lab, Bloomberg Nursing students can study, practice and repeat techniques as often as necessary in order to fine-tune their skills and optimize clinical outcomes in a setting that allows them to build their confidence and competence before using those skills in the field. Under the watchful eyes of experienced professors, students learn both the technical skills required but also experiential learned skills, like teamwork, critical thinking, decision making and prioritization.
